Activities of Interest: golf, walking, WVU sports, sports cars, and travel

Q: How did you first become aware of The Greenbrier and our real estate opportunities?
A: I had been coming to The Greenbrier, off and on since the 70’s and always enjoyed the ambiance. We honeymooned here in 1997 and first toured and looked at The Greenbrier Sporting Club (GSC), in 2005.

Q: What attracted you to become a member at The Greenbrier Sporting Club? What were you looking for in a club?
A: We loved that it was so convenient to our home and that so much was on property. The level of activities is amazing and we have found the staff exceptional in making the GSC a true home away from home. The golf is so well laid out, challenging and is in excellent shape and the facilities are first rate. Dining is world class and with the amenities of the hotel and all it offers, it can be as exciting or as laid back as we desire. The GSC events and activities offer so much fun as we really enjoy meeting other members in the many varied events.

Q: What does The Sporting Club have that other communities do not?
A: Exceptional people at all levels. Truly a level of service which is the best. We are also fortunate to own on Kiawah Island, SC and are members at The Kiawah Island Club, another great property but we have to say the GSC is truly where we feel at home.

Q: How often did you visit The Greenbrier before purchasing real estate?
A: Off and on for several years.

Q: How often do you visit The Greenbrier Sporting Club now since becoming a member?
A: We average at least one weekend a month, and certainly more in Spring and Summer. Though winter getaways are so relaxing and beautiful. Of course we are here for The Greenbrier Classic, it is an exceptionally fun time. We are looking forward to hopefully seeing ski runs someday! We love hosting friends and family as our guests as well. It is perfect for entertaining. Our dear friends from Australia have been here twice and want to come back again and again.

Q: What drew you specifically to your real estate purchase in The Ridges and Howard’s Creek neighborhoods?
A: While we first purchased up in The Ridges and still own a lot there, once Derek came along, we have found Howard’s Creek to be just the perfect spot. Regardless of playing in the yard, riding bikes, skipping rocks in the mill pond or just relaxing, it is so well located we can walk to the hotel or to downtown White Sulphur Springs and just enjoy an ideal setting with a stunning view.

Q: What legacy do you hope to create with your family at The Greenbrier Sporting Club?
A: Being able to spend quality time, both together and with friends and family, in such a glorious setting is special. West Virginia is a wonderful place and the GSC is truly the best of West Virginia. My son and I may even try some unique sports car projects in our new garage at our Howard’s Creek home, which will be wonderful bonding and educational time, for both of us. It is just special that we first brought Derek here when he was ten days old in 2006 and now, he is enjoying growing up and meeting new friends from all over, at the GSC.

YOUR INSIGHT ON BUILDING AT THE GREENBRIER SPORTING CLUB…

Q: Why do you believe now is a good time to build at The Greenbrier Sporting Club?
A: The quality of the builders in WV are exceptional. With interest rates as low as they are, now is a wonderful time to start building your dream home as the craftsman and designers we have worked with are very special.

Q: Did you find the building process efficient?
A: Yes! Thanks to a great architect and great builders!

Q: What was the inspiration that led to the architectural design of your home?
A: We loved working with Mark McConnell of McConnell and Ewing. They have helped us in several ways, on several projects, including on our home in Charleston and we have found Mark just knows how to bring out the best in design.

Q: How did you come to choose the specific neighborhood in which to build?
A: We looked for the right feel of setting, privacy and location.

Q: What factors led to the directional orientation of your home (i.e. morning golf view, sunsets)?
A: The view of the mountains.

Q: What architectural, building, landscape and/or interior design firms did you use and why did you choose them specifically?
A: We love McConnell & Ewing as architects! They have been exceptional, great quality, great design and they are so good, so honest and so helpful. They make the process go so smoothly. For contractors, we have worked with both Agsten Fine Homebuilding and with Paul Loos. Exceptional builders, first class all the way and so professional and helpful. It has been fun, first doing a home on Buchannan Ridge and now, doing a garage and remodeling in Howard’s Creek. In all instances, it has been fun and a great way to really get the custom home we want. For both projects, we have worked with Pat Bibbee interiors from Charleston. Her eye for color, arrangement and style is unmatched. Her son is a former tennis pro at the hotel and Pat is not only a dear friend, but is one of the most well featured interior designers nationally, and all right here in West Virginia.
Carolyn Stephens and Bobby Sams have seen to it our landscaping is in great shape.

Q: What’s a specific feature of your home/homesite that you enjoy (or will enjoy) the most?
A: Stunning view, great fireplace, luxurious chairs and the fact that it is a true livable home.

Congratulations Bubba and Welcome Home!

It was a thrilling end to the 2014 Masters for Greenbrier Sporting Club Member Bubba Watson on Sunday, April 13th as he finished 8 under, and slipped on his second Green Jacket at Augusta National. Bubba became the 17th golfer to win multiple Masters Championships, joining a league of legends such as Gary Player, Nick Faldo, former Greenbrier Golf Pro Emeritus,’ Sam Snead and Tom Watson. (Fun Fact: Now both Watsons have 2 Masters wins each: Tom won in 1977 & 1981 – Bubba won in 2012 & 2014.)

After a trip to Waffle House, and a “few” media appearances, Bubba and his wife Angie headed up to West Virginia to relax after his momentous victory and to also join their Sporting Club family in celebration. On Friday, April 18th, over 200 Members joined Bubba and Angie for a very special Happy Hour on The Event Lawn. Menu fare included Waffle House inspired Grilled Cheese, Masters Pimento Cheese, and sugar cookies equally inspired by the tournament.

Members also had the opportunity to be one-on-one with the winner, and congratulate him on his historical, and well deserved achievement.

Here is Bubba Watson wearing his Green Jacket, pictured with THE first ever Green Jacket! Sam Snead’s Masters jacket is the only one found outside of Augusta, GA and is part of our Snead memorabilia at The Sporting Club Lodge. We love this photo as it also shows Snead making his remarks after his Masters’ win.

Q: What does The Greenbrier and The Greenbrier Sporting Club mean to you and your family?
A: It is a place where we hope to build lasting memories. We look forward to spending the summers here enjoying the great weather and all the outdoor activities. We’ve heard the hotel goes all out for Christmas so we will definitely spend a few holidays here too.

Q: What legacy do you hope to create with your family at The Greenbrier Sporting Club?
A: I hope that this becomes a place that gives us lots quality time together as a family. We would love nothing more than to see our kids continue to come here and eventually, their kids.

Q: What activities and amenities do you envision yourself using most here? (Besides golf of course!)
A: The pool! Caleb loves the water so I think we’ll spend most of our time there. And, since our family loves basketball so much, I think we’ll be spending a lot of time at The Summit basketball court.

Q: What do you think makes The Greenbrier Sporting Club most unique in comparison to other resort communities in America?
A: I think the history, the people and the setting make it so unique. There is so much to do all year round and I love being a part of a place that has so much character in it. It says a lot about a place when generation after generation continues working here!

Q: Is there a unique aspect of your home that you are most looking forward to?
A: I think I am most excited about the fire pit. It’s going to be at the very end of our lot, overlooking the valley. It will be a great way to unwind and teach Caleb how to make s’mores!

Q: What led to the design of your home? Any specific inspirations?
A: My wife and I always wanted a mountainside cabin and we really liked the look of an old barn, so we started with that. We also wanted a big stone fireplace that would be the focal point when you walked in and an open floor plan. Since the weather is so nice most of the year, we wanted a lot of outdoor living space so we have a wrap around porch and of course the fire pit!

The East Family: In Their Own Words

Names:
Bob and Terrie East
Children:

Michael (16), Caroline (14) & Charlie (10)
Primary Home:
Lutherville, MD
Occupation:

CEO and Managing Partner of Westwicke Partners
Activities of Interest:
Primarily, our family plays Golf and Squash. Beyond that, we love to Swim, Bike, Hike and play board games. Given the many other activities at the GSC, we look forward to exploring white water rafting, tubing, fly fishing and even shooting clays.

Q: How did you first become aware of The Greenbrier and our real estate opportunities?
A: Originally, I believe we saw an advertisement in a golf magazine, but we have had several friends over the years mention The Greenbrier resort as a wonderful place to vacation.

Q: What attracted you to become a member at The Greenbrier Sporting Club (GSC)? What were you looking for in a club?
A: After our first visit to the resort we truly fell in love with it. I don’t know anyone who has stayed at the resort who hasn’t felt the same. We also spent some time touring the Sporting Club amenities and were impressed with every aspect of the club. We had spent the last 5 years considering clubs on the east coast and immediately felt “at home” at the GSC. Our kids play squash at a national level so we needed a club that offered world class golf and had squash courts so the kids could practice and play while not at our primary home. Finally, we were looking for a vacation spot that was driving distance from our home in Baltimore.

Q: What do you feel GSC offers that other communities do not?
A: Beyond EVERY activity under the sun, the Sporting Club is in a spectacular setting and has a wonderful sense of community. The other members have been incredibly welcoming. It is truly a special place.

Q: How often does the East Family visit The Greenbrier and The Greenbrier Sporting Club?
A: The first answer is, “not enough!” Specifically though, in the last year, we were there five or six times. We have a crazy busy schedule with work, school and our kids’ sports so the club gives us the opportunity to get away from our hectic lives and recharge our batteries. Eventually, Bob and I plan to retire to GSC and live there, 6 or 7 months a year.

Q: What drew you specifically to your homesite purchase in The Snead golf course neighborhood?
A: When we looked originally, there was no doubt we wanted to be on the golf course because we play golf almost every day during the summer. Then we considered homes and lots in several other neighborhoods. In the end, though, we just couldn’t see ourselves anywhere but right on the golf course and a short walk, bike ride or golf cart ride to the pool and squash courts. A home on The Snead is the perfect location for OUR family.

Q: What do you and your family enjoy doing while you’re home at The Sporting Club?
A: Well, we aren’t home, YET. We hope to break ground soon, but when we do move in, all the activities we mentioned earlier. We also want to see what the state has to offer outside of The Greenbrier.

Q: What legacy do you hope to create with your family at The Greenbrier Sporting Club?
A: As any parent would tell you, one of our jobs is to create great memories for our children. While we have vacationed at many places, the Greenbrier Sporting Club allows us to give our children and even grandchildren an opportunity to build lifelong friendships, memories of lazy summer days, and holidays with friends and family.
