HAMADY ARCHITECTS LLC AWARDED INAUGURAL JOHN RUSSELL POPE AWARD FOR MOUNTAIN HOME DESIGN AT THE GREENBRIER SPORTING CLUB

Hamady Architects LLC was recently awarded the inaugural 2015 John Russell Pope Award by the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art (ICAA), Mid-Atlantic Region, for its work on a mountain home at The Greenbrier Sporting Club, the private residential estate at The Greenbrier, the historic American destination resort in West Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains.
Hamady Architects LLC (Kahlil Hamady, Owner) was recognized at an evening ceremony on Friday, April 17th at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C. The firm received the award in the category of “New Residential Design Over 5,000 Square Feet” for its home at The Greenbrier Sporting Club. The awards recognize the best work of individuals who contribute to the creation of classical and traditional architecture in the Washington Mid-Atlantic region. The design submitted featured an elegant home situated in The Ridges neighborhood at the resort’s renowned private equity club and residential community, The Greenbrier Sporting Club. The home was completed in 2010 with a classical style designed to take advantage of the sweeping mountain vistas that surround it.
“This house is the result of the close collaboration between the owners, the architect and the general contractor,” said Kahlil Hamady, Owner of Hamady Architects LLC. “The John Russell Pope Award is a recognition of the harmonious integration of thoughtful architecture with its natural setting. Ultimately, according to Robert Ogle of Historic New England this award ‘sheds a bright light on the splendor of the West Virginia landscape.'”
The Greenbrier Sporting Club is highly acclaimed for the quality of its homes and the respect given to the surrounding natural and historical environment. Accordingly, homes are shaped in a style sympathetic to either The Greenbrier’s classically inspired architecture or the rugged beauty of the Allegheny Mountains. Site planning, as well as architectural and landscape design, are controlled by the Architectural Review Board (ARB), a permanent committee of The Greenbrier Sporting Club Community Association, which oversees harmonious development, preservation and enhancement of natural environments, while assisting owners in obtaining maximum utilization and enjoyment of their property. The Awards given by the ICAA are named for John Russell Pope, 1874-1937, best known as the architect of the Jefferson Memorial and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Educated at the American School of Architecture in Rome (later called the American Academy in Rome) and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Pope was renowned for interpreting European classicism in a new, American form. The ICAA is the leading national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the practice and appreciation of the classical tradition in architecture and the allied arts.
