The love of chili and charity returned this month as The Greenbrier Sporting Club hosted it’s 8th Annual Cabin Fever Chili Cook-Off fundraiser on Saturday January 18th. Nine member-sponsored teams competed this year with almost $10,000 raised for local charities. Attendees enjoyed live music by Sporting Club Member, Craig Truit, who generously donated his time and talent. Because chili pairs perfectly with an ice cold beer, regional brews for the event were Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company from Maxwelton, West Virginia, Parkway Brewing Company from Salem, Virginia and Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company from Roseland, Virginia.

Prizes were awarded based on Chef’s Choice and People’s Choice. Our guest judges this year were made up of a trio of local culinarians, led by Chef Emeritus, Bill Fanus. We welcomed back Chef Chris Foley, Culinary Arts Director at Greenbrier West High School and new to the event, introduced Chef Caleb Arwood, Chef and Pitmaster at Road Hogs BBQ.  The judges were presented with a tasting of each team’s chili , scoring each individually, and after careful consideration chose the winners in the Chef’s Choice category.

In the Team Spirit category everyone’s a winner! Each team was provided with a jar to collect cash donations, “Spirit Money”, at their individual booths. Attendees then donated to each team’s selected charity based on their presentation and overall spirit. All the money in the spirit jar was donated directly to that charity.
